Description

Before he was called to defend the country in 1939, our grandfather planted this vine in a location you may find hard to pronounce or even read : the hamlet of « Am Haselrain », which can be translated into « hillside of the hazelnut trees ».

The vineyard is situated on a hilly location along the road to Bergheim and benefits from a southeast orientation.
The soils (remains of the time when a sea was covering the land) are composed of loam and sandstone from the Vosges mountains. With its extremely deep roots, the vine's growth cycle is less influenced by weather changes and the plants are free from any hydric or alimentary stress.

The « Haselrain », also known as « Häsle » gives favourable conditions to reach maturity and offers small harvests. Even if vine stocks tend to be less fertile as time passes, they are still beautiful : delicate and subtle aromas, a light body and a soft and rich structure. Try this nectar with starters, fruits or even nowadays inventive gastronomy.

Description

In Alsatian MANDELBERG means “hillside of the almond trees”. It is said that Romans were already cultivating this sunny hill when they introduced the intensive culture of grapevine. Every year during springtime, grape flowers decorate the steep slopes above the village of Mittelwihr with a delicate tone of pink.

This south-oriented hill stands on a marly limestone ground and conglomerates of the Rhine rift's edges (Tertiary period). The Foehn wind (a dry wind descending from the mountains) in spring and permeable alkaline soils offer good conditions for a quick warming and an early bud break.

The fine and charming wines of MANDELBERG have a strong taste of fruits. The Gewurztraminer produced on Aunt Marguerite's ancient vineyard is a haughty and discreet wine. Indeed, its exquisite aromas contrast with arrogance and pride to the palate; an ideal drink for connoisseurs. Low in residual sugars, it suits sweet and savory dishes, exotic meals and can be enjoyed as a pre-dinner drink of course. Try it also with foie gras in jelly, canard à l'orange (duck with orange), cheese, etc.

This wine was awarded a 17/20 by the 2009 Gault Millau Wines Guide and 89/100 by the Nouveau Guide des Vins BIO.

Composition:

100% Gewürztraminer

Description

The Froehn is Zellenberg's highest hill. It extends on the sloping hills where used to be the castle, headquarters of the bailiwick administrative center run by the bishops of Basel and then Strasbourg. Unfortunately, the French Revolution weakened this symbol of feudal power. On Walter and Grandidier's lithography (represented on the label) we clearly understand the supremacy carried out by the castle in the entrance of Riquewihr valley, over the highly Protestants and the Wurtemberg Princes in the neighborhood.

The very steep slopes from 270 m to 300 m are a mix of clay-marl soil dating from a Mesozoic era, the Early Jurassic epoch. Formed with dark grey schistose-marl, it has a thin white limestone layer as well as carbonated and ferruginous nodules. 150 million years ago it used to be under shallow and anaerobic waters. This rocky foundation provides the village's houses a better stability.
The highest part bearing the village is made of a chalky sandstone layer dating from the Aalenian stage. It is also interesting to note that when it is raining the rock water-soaks due to its porosity which explains the creation of wells in some basements of the village. This enables the place to be more autonomous at the time.

This yellow-colored wine, resplendent with golden glints, will leave you with a subtle and mineral flavor of rose, litchi and honey. Candied fruits, apricot quince notes, match perfectly in a strong palate without being too heavy.
Roundness and sophisticated fruity best characterized Froehn wines, two characteristics that make them for ageing. The end of the season as well as the botrytis highly benefited to the harvest and granted the 2005 Froehn Gewurztraminer Grand cru a powerful and generous note.

It would be wise to keep it preciously in the cellar in order to let time improve the wine, for if it will surprise you now, you cannot imagine the result after a few years.

Best served as a pre-dinner drink or late harvest wine, with sophisticated or flavorful dishes, like Roquefort and nuts pie, Creole style chicken, pineapple veal, roasted apricots with flaked almonds and mint, …so much in store, so be creative!

This wine got an 89/100 by the 2011 Gilbert and Gaillard Guide

Description

GEWURZTRAMINER

The scientific name of this old Alsatian variety is Savagnin odorant (scented Savagnin). The specific semi-continental climate of the region preserves the strong aromas concentrated in its purple berries.
This moelleux and syrupy wine is made from noble rot (under the effect of the botrytis mushroom, the berries of the grape shrink but the quality of the juice improves) and has a stunning and wide aromatic spectrum.

LATE HARVEST

Late Harvest wines are the result of overmaturation and concentration effects due to Botrytis. Those produced in Alsace can potentialy be the most powerful in the world.
In exceptionnal years, the noble rot of the berries (botrytis cinerea) brings complex aromas, a powerful structure and a long finish to the wines. Anticyclones, morning fog and sunny afternoons are the main conditions for the botrytis to develop. Clay and heavy soils are ideal to produce these complex aromas.
Our vines of Gewürztraminer designed for Late Harvest wines are generally old and not very productive, but they have a wide root system which helps the vine to mature quickly and the botrytis to spread.
Late Harvest wines are high quality products resulting from the winemaker's hard work, weather conditions and nature's whims.

TASTING

Late Harvest wines are characterized by a deep, thick and shiny robe creating persistant legs on the sides of the glass.
Its bursting aromas will first lead you to floral flavors close to rose, to fruity tastes like mango, pineapple, lychee...and finally spices and aromatic plants.
To the palate you will discover flavors of candied fruits with a sweet and soft structure, tones of botrytis and a long finish that qualify the Late Harvest wines.

FOOD COMBINATIONS

Enjoy it without any dish, as a pre-dinner drink or with dessert. You can also try it with chocolate or nowadays inventive gastronomy.

Description

GEWURZTRAMINER is an old Alsatian grape variety whose ampelographic name is aromatic Savagnin. Lands of Alsace provide ideal soils that suit its needs. Its little purple berries concentrates within its thick bloom plenty of aromas which are preserved thanks to the favorable climate of Vosges' lower hills. It does not need much time to achieve maturation and produces strong and generous wines as well as abundant late harvest wines. Known worldwide it seems to be the best representative of Alsace wines.

ZELLENBERG VINTAGE

Oriented South-East on a gentle slope, it lies on soils dating from the Pliensbachien stage, Jurassic heritage of our region once covered by a sea. It is a marly soil with leached sandbank coming from Vosges' sandstone. The roots had time to probe the most inaccessible depth of this land, protecting like this the vegetative cycle from the vagaries of weather. This prevents the plant from suffering any hydric and alimentary stress. In these ideal conditions, we manage BIODYNAMIC culture that suits perfectly our winery philosophy.

TASTING

Very expressive, it reveals intense ripe fruit and exotic aromas. Its bursting aromas will first lead you to floral flavors close to rose, to fruity tastes like mango, pineapple, leeches...and finally spices (cardamom, cinnamon, caraway, ginger, pepper…). It's a ropy, unctuous, robust, subtle and elegant wine that will give you an incomparable moelleux year after year.

FOOD COMBINATIONS

Enjoy it as a pre-dinner drink or with fruity desserts, cheese and exotic food. You can also try it with chocolate or nowadays inventive gastronomy.
