Located on the warmer face of a neighboring village, the ROSACKER of Hunawihr grows from 230 to 330 m high, and lies on the Upper Muschelkalk and Lettenkohle, ceratites-limestone almost entirely dolomitized, marl and compact dolomites. Those are Mesozoic rocks with marine origins which have surfaced owing to the subsidence of the Rhine rift and got some fallen sandstones from the Vosges.
The “rose fields” or wild roses covering the bank and the hill road gave the name to the Rosacker.
In the photo background just behind the famous fortified church of Hunawihr is the Rosacker hill.
When young, the Riesling Grand Cru is a sharp-flavor wine, with a distinctive peppery which rounds out while maturing to reveal the mineral flavor specific to marly-limestone soils. This wine is aimed for gastronomic use. Considered as a reference among our vineyards, it is, of course, quite dry and suitable for the traditional consumption of that kind of wine. We advise you to let it maturing a while in order to express its mineral flavor.
We recommend it with starters. Riesling is ideal with fishes and shellfishes for it enhances the iodine of seafood products. It also perfectly matches with poultry and white meat as well as young and goat cheese.
- At MAXIMILIEN's Restaurant (owned by the Eblin-Fuchs family and mentioned 1* in the Michelin Guide), Jean Michel Eblin will serve it with one of his creations: fried scallop with fresh morels and asparagus or fillet of sea bass grilled on the skin with sweet and sour vegetables and scampi in cottage pie.
